- **The lives of I**

**I** comes from Old English *ic*. The modern word has shrunk to a single letter, yet still lets every speaker claim a place in a sentence.  
Its reference changes with whoever says it. Two people can say “I” and mean two different people.
- **1 letter · 1 syllable.** It sounds like *eye*.
- Standard English writes the pronoun **I** with a capital letter, even in the middle of a sentence.
- **I** is the subject form; **me** is the object form: “I remember Sam.” “Sam remembers me.”
- **I’m** expands to *I am*; **I’ve** expands to *I have*.
- The pronoun and the noun in today’s entry meet at the idea of a self: the person speaking, and that person’s sense of individuality.
- Japanese **私（わたし）** is a common way to say “I.” In this example, the speaker can remain implicit.
