### Useless facts

- **The surprisingly eventful life of *into***

*Into* began as two words. In late Old English, **in** and **to** fused into **intō** as the language’s case endings faded. Those endings had once helped distinguish being inside a place from moving toward its interior, so the new preposition inherited the job of carrying something across a boundary.
English eventually pushed that crossing far beyond rooms and doorways. A person can run *into* a wall, turn water *into* ice, go *into* medicine, or be *into* jazz. That last sense—being intensely involved or interested—appears in records of American youth slang by **1967**.
- The Scrabble score is **4 points**: I = 1, N = 1, T = 1, and O = 1.
- **4 letters** and **2 syllables.**
- Common pronunciations are **/ˈɪntuː/** and the reduced **/ˈɪntə/**.
- Although it names a spatial relation, *into* usually signals **movement or change**; *in* usually describes an already occupied location.
- *Into* stays one word in “walked into the room.” In “walked in to speak,” *in* belongs to *walked* and *to* begins the next phrase.
- Its meanings now cover **entry, collision, transformation, occupation, investigation,** and **enthusiasm**.
- The example sentence appears in *Prompted Hearts & Grief Algorithm* (2025). [Read *Prompted Hearts & Grief Algorithm* → ](https://keithhayden.net/prompted-hearts-grief-algorithm-complete-duology/)
