Raglan sleeves - Digital Novelist notes - 2026-09-17

How a one-armed man started a fashion movement

Ajani,

You know how I be pickin' random words to write with?

Today's was a funny one: raglan sleeves.

Definition: a sleeve that extends to the neckline with slated seams from the underarm to the neck

Not only is it a fun word to say (raglan sleeves. try saying it once you'll have to say it at least three times), it also has a cool backstory.

Turns out it was named for a 19th century British military vet. Dude lost his right arm at Napoleon's famous Battle of Waterloo and had relearn to do everything (including still swing a sword) with his left. Homie was hardcore.

To facilitate his movement, tailors redesigned his uniform to wear the sleeves went from the neck straight down. I guess this was a major fashion innovation at the time. It was all stiff sleeves to go with their upper lips in the UK before.

This guy was the Lord of Raglan, so the sleeves became know as raglan sleeves.

Now how did I use this in the novel?

In the course of writing the final battle, I had two of the brothers get their shoulders dislocated. This made them drag the limp arm around Bushido Blade style (remember that?)

Perfect place to insert this line:

At that point Scorch and I had reset our arms to partial movement. No need for a raglan sleeve (thankfully).

Let me know what you think.

Scorch shook his head. “Told you not to trust that bitch.”
Sun said, “Sorry Shade, but we gotta do this.” He slapped his boney fingers on my shoulder. I just nodded, then we took off.
Chimera was ugly. Head and claws of an eagle, body of lion dog, tail of dragon, size of a skyscraper— that about sums it up.
