Antonisha,
As you have seen a U.S. involved war started this weekend and it affects me personally.
I don't talk about it much these days, but I'm a U.S. Air Force veteran. I served about 8 years on active duty as an admin officer then as a Special Agent. Furthermore, I graduated from a military college (US Air Force Academy) and grew up in a military town.
As you can see I'm closely connected to the U.S. Armed Forces. So the war isn't just some abstraction playing out online and on TV for me. It has a real effect on people I know and love.
I was taught from an early age that being civic-minded about community and country was just as important as making a good living or being smart. That idea of duty to something greater, bigger than me, has never left.
That's one of the reasons I write.
Having the talent and time to organize my stories and ideas is a gift I don't want to waste. This is especially true during a moment like this because, war is unpredictable.
While it might seem like the bombs are blowing up in someone else's backyard, you never know when you'll be touched by it indirectly. I've always kept that in mind, even now that my military service is done.
What is your unique gift to the world? Have you shared it with anyone today?
I encourage you to do that. And whatever your faith, say a prayer, send one up, or pour one out, for those doing their duty on behalf of us. I know they'll appreciate it.
-Keith
