I Never Thought I Could Do This: Translating My Book into Japanese – こんなことができるとは思わなかった： 私の本を日本語に翻訳する
My Japanese ability has reached a previously unthinkable level.
Writing then translating an entire book you wrote will do that.
I tweeted this yesterday.
But this is a level beyond that.
It’s what active listening is to shadowing. Both are effective language learning techniques. But the second is more cognitively demanding and is thus more powerful for long term retention by a significant factor.
This is isn’t surprising.
The more you can combine language modes, the faster you can learn the language.
Translation progress
Yesterday was a marathon. I rose at 0230 to attend an online ConvertKit happy hour event. There I was greeted with a splash of Gen Z energy, where the facilitator wore a colorful jacket standing before an even more colorful graffiti type background as he bobbed to chill-upbeat music. I wasn’t prepared for this that early in the morning.
The session went well. After connecting with a few other entrepreneurs, I began translating. Unlike the first day, my process began to flow.
Juggling the various tools became faster so I didn’t have to worry about that so much anymore. When dealing with large chunks of text in LLMs there’s a lot of unexpected waiting time. This is especially true when working in a non-Western language like Japanese. It’s clear these models have been trained in mostly English, since working in Japanese is noticeably slower than in English. (I wonder if there’s a Japanese first model? I’ll have to look into that.)
Because of this, I found myself with intervals of screen staring as the text loads. After awhile, I thought to use this as an opportunity to do short bursts of language learning.
During one of those sessions, I made this video.
My reading of the first chapter of my novel is pretty good (until I started to choke up at the end). How did I practice?
I used Word’s text-to-speech feature to listen and repeat until my renditions became smoother. When paired with the sentence writing strategy I’ve been using while reading Harry Potter, I was able to not only read, but also understand it too. This made it easier to focus on saying the words. It was super effective.
Afternoon crash
I went to run a few errands, then returned for more translation in the afternoon. It was also at that time I decided to record myself translating an entire chapter (to possibly turn into a product or at minimum social media bait). This was a bad idea.
By this time I was running on empty. I was out of gas and it showed mid-filming. I could barely keep my eyes open, I got lost in my process – a complete flop.
I’ll have to throw the hour long video out. I got proper rest last night, so I might try it again later today.
A long book
I realized the Japanese translation will be very long, so in traditional practice it will have to be multiple volumes.
Does Amazon allow multiple volumes for a single book? Do I have to post it as a series? Not sure about the answers to these questions.
For now they don’t matter. It’s back to translation for today.

言語を学ぶ究極の方法とは？
何かを書いて、それを翻訳する。
即座に文脈を理解できるため、語彙や文化的ニュアンスの習得が早まる。
しかし、これはそのレベルを超えている。
シャドーイングに対するアクティブリスニングのようなものだ。どちらも効果的な言語学習テクニックだ。しかし、後者の方がより認知的な負荷が高いため、長期的な定着に大きな威力を発揮する。
これは驚くべきことではない。
言語モードを組み合わせることができればできるほど、より早く言語を習得することができるのだ。
翻訳の進捗状況
昨日はマラソンだった。オンラインのConvertKitのハッピーアワーイベントに参加するため、0230に起床した。そこで私は、カラフルなジャケットを着たファシリテーターが、チルアップビートの音楽に合わせて揺れながら、さらにカラフルなグラフィティタイプの背景の前に立っている、Z世代のエネルギーの飛沫で迎えられた。朝早くからこのようなことになるとは思ってもみなかった。
セッションはうまくいった。何人かの起業家とつながった後、私は翻訳を始めた。初日とは違い、私のプロセスは流れ始めた。
様々なツールを使いこなすのが速くなったので、あまり心配する必要がなくなった。LLMで大量のテキストを扱う場合、予期せぬ待ち時間が発生することが多い。日本語のような非西洋言語で作業する場合は特にそうだ。日本語での作業は英語よりも明らかに遅いので、これらのモデルが主に英語でトレーニングされていることは明らかだ。(日本語ファーストのモデルはいるのだろうか？ 調べてみる必要がありそうだ）。
このため、テキストが読み込まれる間、画面を凝視している自分がいた。しばらくして、これを機会に短時間の語学学習をしようと考えた。
そのセッションのひとつで、こんなビデオを作った。
私の小説の第1章の朗読はかなり良い（最後の方で息が詰まり始めるまで）。どうやって練習したのか？
ワードのテキスト読み上げ機能を使って、自分の朗読がスムーズになるまで繰り返し聞いた。ハリー・ポッターを読んでいるときに使っていた文章を書く戦略と組み合わせると、読むだけでなく理解することもできた。これによって、単語を言うことに集中しやすくなった。超効果的だった。
午後のクラッシュ
少し用事を済ませ、午後にまた翻訳に戻った。その時、1章全体を翻訳している自分の姿を録画することにした（商品化するか、最低でもソーシャルメディアの餌にするため）。これは悪い考えだった。
このとき私は空回りしていた。私はガス欠で、それは撮影の途中で明らかになった。目を開けているのがやっとで、自分のプロセスに没頭してしまった。
この1時間のビデオは破棄しなければならない。昨夜はちゃんと休んだから、今日中にもう一度やってみようかな。
長い本
邦訳はとても長くなるので、伝統的なやり方では複数巻にならざるを得ないことに気づいた。

もっと大きな本が必要だな…。
私の小説の邦訳は7万3千語で、ドキュメントはすでに177ページある！(まだ3分の1も終わっていない）。
これが、日本の小説がしばしば複数巻になる理由のひとつだ。(この2冊を合わせると、三体シリーズの3冊目になる）。

縦書きは英語のように1ページあたりの文字数が多くない。
今のペースだと、『セレウスとリムニック』は少なくとも3巻になる。
