Translation Marathon: 7 Chapters Down, Big Decisions Made – 翻訳マラソン： 7章を終え、大きな決断を下す
Day 3 of the novel translation is in the books and I’m BEAT.
Got through 7 chapters today (the most on a single day so far) and made 2 important decisions.
The first was around the distribution of the book. Mainly: how many volumes should the book be?
My original projection was 3, but after completing the second section of the story (there are 8 sections in total) I thought about it some more.
3 volumes means 3 times the print cost for a single book. Still not sure how a single book that’s not a series works, but I know it will cost more to make each book.
So I shrank the font down to 10-point. Now my manuscript looks like the code from “The Matrix”.
The new plan is to go with 2 volumes. The second half will contain extra stories, alternate endings, and bonus content so it should balance out.

Prequel Connection
I completed proofing and translating two of the most important chapters of the book today. Why are they so critical?
Because they link this story to the wider story universe. This was something I wasn’t think about AT ALL when I wrote the first draft and created the world back in 2019.
In fact, Cereus & Limnic was meant to be a standalone novel, since I figured I’d want to move on to writing other types of stories. Turns out I was right about that (kinda) but I ended up making it into a series anyway.
What’s cool is going back and adding details and dropping hints to the connections in future releases.
This was the biggest one I added during one of the most emotionally moving scenes in the book:
This addition connects directly to the events in the prequel. Can’t wait to elaborate on it when I start writing it.
AI Chatbot of Choice – Claude
I wasn’t very impressed with Claude for writing when I first tried it. But for this project it’s perfect. Turns out between ChatGPT’s strict direction following and Gemini’s judgmental nature Claude rides the middle line. It’s permissive enough to get the job done, yet has enough creative freedom to be an effective collaborator.
It hit the token limit fast. But I suspect because I’m working in two languages (especially since one of them is a more difficult non-Western one) it eats up tokens like an 80s arcade machine.
Fortunately, the cool down period isn’t too long – usually an hour or two. Enough time to take a break, then return to begin again.
This helped me stay in the zone for most of the day to keep a steady pace. And I need to stay on track.
March is quickly coming to a close, which means I’m down to 90 days (give or take) to complete C&L: EFO.
No time to lose! Time to get writing!

小説翻訳の3日目が終わった。
今日は7章を読み終え（これまでの1日で最多）、2つの重要な決定を下した。
一つ目は、本の配本についてだ。主に、この本を何巻にするかということだ。
当初の予想では3冊だったが、物語の第2部（全部で8部ある）を終えた後、もう少し考えてみた。
3巻ということは、単行本の印刷コストが3倍になる。シリーズものではない単行本の仕組みはまだよくわからないが、1冊1冊を作るにはもっとコストがかかることはわかる。
そこで、フォントを10ポイントに縮小した。今、私の原稿は『マトリックス』のコードみたいになっている。
新しい計画は2巻で行くことだ。後半には番外編や別エンディング、ボーナスコンテンツが含まれるので、バランスは取れるはずだ。
ボーナスコンテンツといえば…。
前日譚コネクション
今日、この本の最も重要な2つの章の校正と翻訳を終えた。なぜ重要なのか？
この物語をより広い物語世界と結びつけるからだ。これは、2019年に最初の草稿を書き、世界を創造したときにはまったく考えていなかったことだ。
実際、『セレウスとリムニック』は独立した小説にするつもりだった。それは（ちょっと）正しかったことがわかったが、とにかくシリーズ化することになった。
クールなのは、後戻りしてディテールを加えたり、今後のリリースでつながりを示唆したりすることだ。
これは、この本の中で最も感動的なシーンの1つに追加した最大のものだ：
この追加は、前日譚での出来事に直接つながる。書き始めるのが待ちきれないよ。
AIチャットボット – クロード
クロードを最初に試したときは、文章を書くのにあまり感心しなかった。でもこのプロジェクトでは完璧だ。ChatGPTの厳格な指示に従うところと、Geminiの判断的なところの中間を行くのがクロードなんだ。仕事をこなすのに十分寛容でありながら、効果的なコラボレーターとなるのに十分な創造的自由を持っている。
そのため、トークンの限界に達するのが早い。しかし、私が2つの言語で仕事をしているため（特にそのうちの1つはより難しい非西洋言語であるため）、80年代のアーケードマシンのようにトークンを食いつぶしてしまうのだろう。
幸いなことに、クールダウンの時間はそれほど長くなく、通常は1～2時間だ。休憩して、また戻って始めるには十分な時間だ。
このおかげで、私は一日の大半をゾーンで過ごし、安定したペースを保つことができた。そして、私は軌道を維持する必要がある。
あっという間に3月が終わろうとしている。つまり、C&L：EFOを完成させるのに90日（ギブ・アンド・テイク）しかないのだ。
